Marble – The Shining Stone
The word marble comes from the Greek word marmaros which means shining stone. Marble is one of seven natural stones which have a massive demand in the world market. To the geologist, marble is a non-foliated, granular metamorphic rock that is formed by the metamorphism of limestone and dolostone.
A number of minerals and gems can form in marble. Spinel from Vietnam, ruby and sapphire from Myanmar (formerly Burma) and lazulite from Afghanistan are just a few examples. Construction marble is a stone which is composed of calcite, dolomite or serpentine which is capable of taking a polish.
With it’s varied range of colours, textures and veining, marble is the ideal decorative material for fireplace hearths and back panels, vanity tops, walls and floors.
Marble can be cut and polished in many different ways; with the latest CNC machine technology almost anything is possible, from a simple polished ogee edge to a 3 dimensional motif carved in the face.
Marbles hardness allows it to be polished to a smooth, bright, shining surface. However, marble typically has lines and veins running throughout it. This look is what is typically referred to as marbling. The lines and veins are from silt, sand, clay and other impurities that were in the original limestone from which the marble was formed.
Advantages of Marble Stone
White marble was prized for its use in sculptures since classical times. This preference has to do with the softness and relative isotropy and homogeneity, and a relative resistance to shattering.
Also, the low index of refraction of calcite allows light to penetrate several millimeters into the stone before being scattered out, resulting in the characteristic “waxy” look which gives “life” to marble sculptures of the human body.
Pure, bright white marble is highly desired because of its even color. Since the days of ancient Rome, it has been used for statues and architectural decorations because of its pure, bright color and its hardness.
Applications of Marble Stone
Marble adds a sophisticated element to your home, and its wonderful appearance, superior engineering characterizes and ease of maintenance make it a natural choice for floors, wall coverings, table tops, bathroom walls, floors, vanity tops and showers.
Marble is suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Marble has many different sizes of crystals. Marble has many colour variances due to the impurities present at formation. Some of the different colour of marble are white, red, black, grey, pink, and green. Michelangelo and other talented sculptors in ancient Greece and Rome recognized the great beauty of marble. Inspired, they created from it remarkable works like David, the Venus de Medici and the Parthenon. Because of their accomplishments, marble today is an elegant addition to any home.
